The 14 Basecamps Challenge: What it is and why we’re doing it

By the Russell-Smith Family

A Family Adventure Like No Other

Picture this: four backpacks, two adventurous boys, and two slightly crazy parents setting off into the high altitude mountains.
Crisp mountain air, snow-dusted peaks, yak bells echoing through the valleys. This is our classroom, our playground, and our family’s biggest adventure yet.

We’re on a mission to complete the 14 Basecamps Challenge, by visiting every base camp of the world’s fourteen 8,000 metre peaks.
That’s over 1,100 km of trekking, spread across five+ years, through Pakistan, Nepal, and China.
And yes — we’re doing it together as a family.

What is the 14 Basecamps Challenge?

Most people have heard of Everest Base Camp, but there are fourteen mountains on Earth higher than 8,000 metres.
Each one has its own story, its own people, and its own base camp, the staging point where climbers begin their ascent into the death zone.

We’re not climbing the peaks (we’ll leave that to the pros like Nirmal “Nims” Purja).
Instead, we’re trekking to each of their base camps (the gateway to greatness) to meet the mountains, explore their cultures, and see what these wild, remote places can teach us as a family.

Why We’re Doing It

Our reasons go deeper than altitude.

Inspiration

Like so many, we were inspired by Nirmal “Nims” Purja and his 14 Peaks project — the idea that no dream is too big if you’ve got determination (and maybe a little stubbornness).
But our take is different: a family edition of that spirit. One that proves adventure doesn’t have to wait until the kids are grown up.

Family Growth

This challenge is as much about who we become as where we go.
Our boys are learning that grit, laughter, and teamwork go further than GPS.
They’re also discovering the world through real experiences — sleeping in teahouses, chatting with porters, and watching glaciers creak at dawn.

Records and Meaning

Sure, there’s maybe a record to be broken (the youngest person, the first family, to visit all 14 base camps), but for us, it’s more about heart than headlines. It’s about building shared stories and lifelong memories.

Giving Back

We’re proud to support the Nimsdai Foundation — whose mission, Respect • Educate • Protect, fits perfectly with ours.
We aim to raise £12,000 to fund education projects and scholarships for children in the mountain regions of Nepal and Pakistan.
Because adventure means more when it helps others climb, too.

Where We’ve Been So Far

The challenge kicked off in Pakistan, where we tackled the mighty base camps of:

  • K2
  • Nanga Parbat
  • Broad Peak
  • Gasherbrum I & II

It was raw, wild, beautiful — and utterly unforgettable.
We trekked through scorching valleys, glacial moraines, and high-altitude camps, meeting incredible local guides and porters who quickly became friends.
Pakistan tested us in every way possible — physically, mentally, and emotionally — but it also reminded us why we started this journey in the first place.

Then came Everest and Lhotse Base Camps in Nepal — a totally different world, but the same spirit of adventure.
The trails were alive with energy: prayer flags dancing in the wind, teahouse fires crackling, yaks plodding through ice-blue valleys.
Reaching Everest Base Camp as a family was something we’ll never forget — the culmination of years of dreaming, training, and determination.

And now, we’re already looking ahead to the next mountain on our list: Manaslu Base Camp.
Another challenge, another culture, another chance to explore the magic of the Himalayas together.

Why Base Camps (Not Summits)?

Because adventure isn’t always about going higher, sometimes it’s about going together.

Base camps sit on the edge of the impossible — where yaks stop and climbers start.
They’re places of shared humanity, where families, porters, trekkers, and climbers all cross paths under the same prayer flags.

That’s what draws us in: the people, the stories, the journey itself.

Oh…. and yer… climbing to the top is super difficult and dangerous! There is no way we are putting ourselves through that!

What We’re Learning

Every trek teaches us something new, about the world and about ourselves.
The boys are learning how to be patient when the trail feels endless.
We’re learning that the best moments often come after the toughest climbs.
And all of us are learning how small we are compared to these giants, and how big our gratitude can feel.

How You Can Be Part of It

  • Follow Our Journey – We’ll be sharing stories, photos, and videos from every trek on Instagram @familyrussellsmithtravel.
  • Support Our Cause – Donations to the Nimsdai Foundation go directly to education initiatives in the Himalayas.
  • Share Your Story – We’d love to hear from other families, trekkers, or dreamers chasing their own adventures.

This Is Just the Beginning

We’ve already taken our first steps, crossed our first glaciers, and shared our first high-altitude hot chocolate.
But the adventure is far from over.

The 14 Basecamps Challenge is about family, purpose, and the power of shared dreams.
It’s a journey that’s testing us, bonding us, and — hopefully — inspiring others to say yes to something bold.

The trails are calling. The mountains are waiting.
And we’re already on our way
