Day 22 – Crossing Rivers and Setting Camp: Our 10-Hour Trek

Kabuche to Random Camp – 10 hours

The first two hours of our day took us back over the last stretch of the glacier. It was emotional stepping off it, knowing this part of our journey is coming to an end. The scenery on the way out was stunning, with glacial lakes reflecting the towering peaks around us.

After the glacier, we took an alternate route over dusty plains. This route had several river crossings, some of which were shallow enough for boots, but others forced us to go barefoot. Our assistant guide, Muhammad, helped the boys across, sparing them the icy pain we felt in our bare feet. Thankfully, a couple of our porters lent us their rubber shoes, which provided a bit of protection from the rocks, though the freezing water was still a shock.

We crossed a rickety bridge before pushing on for another four hours through dust and rocks, arriving at a windy, makeshift camp. Setting up camp, we worried our tents might blow away, but as the sun set, the wind calmed, and we enjoyed yet another spectacular sunset.
