Planning the ultimate Family High-Altitude Hydration Strategy

This week, we are deep in the logistics of Peru trekking preparation. We are staring down the barrel of a brutal 9-day multi-day hike featuring ten separate passes over 5,000+ metres, alongside a few shorter 3-to-5-day high-altitude warm-up treks. It is a spectacular physical challenge, but it is also an absolute logistical puzzle. Especially when your family high-altitude trekking crew consists of two highly active adults, an energetic 14-year-old teenager, and a fast-growing 11-year-old.

Over the years, we’ve tested the absolute limits of trail nutrition. We started out as just the two of us relying solely on plain water, basic trail snacks, and a pinch of salt thrown into our squash. In recent times, we graduated to dropping Nuun tablets into dusty bottles, dissolving Phizz tablets after long mountain days, and ripping open standard SiS gels for a quick boost.

The biggest roadblock on a multi-day, extreme-altitude trek is balancing nutrient demands.
